Classroom Expectations
Course Content:
In art class, our course of study will focus upon problem-solving, using the elements and principles of design in order to create expressive, but well-organized works of art. We will also focus heavily on basic drawing skills. Students will be exposed to a variety of both two and three-dimensional materials and mediums, and will also have opportunities to write about and discuss their own works, and the works of others. As students get more advanced, there will be opportunity for them to focus on areas that they would like to improve on their own.
Objectives:
Students will create artworks using a variety of media and techniques.
Students will begin to analyze their own artwork, other student's artwork as well as the work of well known artists through critiques and writing.
Students will develop their own style by creating sketches to plan for art projects.
Students will maintain a visual journal with class notes, sketches, vocabulary and observational items.
Students will identify major artists and styles.
Expectations:
Students will come to class prepared with a pencil and their sketchbook.
Students will finish projects in a timely manner.
If a student is not able to finish on time, they should consult with me so that we can set a new time for their project to be done.
Students should have their first and last names on the back of their art along with a title.
The art room will be picked up and materials put away at the end of every class period. Check the floor for trash, wipe tables if dirty, push in chairs, and put away artwork either in the drawers or on the drying racks.
In the art room, the most important rule is respect. Respect for each other, your artwork, your teacher, and the materials. You will be asked to be polite, and not put down your artwork or of another artist.
Effective artists constantly practice their drawing skills in journals or sketchbooks. As part of the art program, students are required to complete sketchbook assignments as homework. You will be assigned weekly sketchbook assignments to help you build your creative drawing skills. Due dates and topics will be clearly posted in the art room and online. These homework assignments will be worth credit along with major projects.
It is my belief that all students are capable of making art. I ask that everyone put effort into your work and the quality will show. We will work together to improve your art. I grade artwork based on several major factors: effort, mastery and craftsmanship.
Each project has a grading rubric that will be available to students before the project.
